I'm certainly not a bird watcher, but enjoy feeding them for the winter. One thing I've noticed about most birds, is their ability to fly. Here's my stunning conclusion. Most birds were created to fly. As a matter of fact, a grounded bird is an abnormality.

The first time I remember this happening was back in the late 1980's. I had arrived in Warsaw, Poland for a week of mission work. The next day I was to journey to the southern tip of Poland, just across from the Czechoslovakian border. We needed to spend a day in Warsaw for some orientation and direction from our leader. Once we were out in public, we were immediately recognized as westerners. Once recognized as westerners, it was also assumed--we had money! So, I experienced for the first time someone actually begging me for money.

Ever notice there are generally two opposites? Think about it. You have black and white, positive or negative, winning or loosing, thin or fat, ugly or beautiful, and large or small. There are obviously other breakdowns, but often we can bring it down to just a couple of choices.

You know this--who do we blame for most things? Politicians! It's all their fault! You know, stuff like the cost of oil, the cost of the telephone, the pot holes on our streets, the grade four curriculum, the lack of summer, the size of watermelons, my noisy neighborhood, etc. all point to a deficient government. So, our 'solution' is democracy. If you're cheesed off with the price of gas, vote in another leader, or another party. Yes sir, that's the solution--because everything that is too pricy, too noisy, broken, useless, etc. is the fault of our government.

We live in a culture where the pressure to be better, richer, more beautiful, tougher, smarter, faster, quicker is prominent--in short, we're taught to outdo the other guy. Much of life is this race against the other guy. You have to lose more weight than the other person. Or, you need more in your RRSP's than the other person. So much of life is a contest that sets us up to be identified as either a winner or looser. It's observable as we jockey for position on the 401, careful not to let the other guy in. If you don't maintain your competitive edge, you'll get swallowed up by the traffic and you'll miss your opportunity to show the guy you're passing that you're car is "FASTER". Always pushing, always seeking to prove we're the better man, always trying to out maneuver the next guy--this is the name of the game in our culture.
