God Searching For Man PDF Print E-mail

If you've read any of my columns you will know this:  my greatest passion is shopping--NOT!   When I shop with my wife we often end up in different places in the store.  Usually I have found what I need and now I'm left looking for my wife.  In my search I first of all think--'Hmm, what is she wearing.' Duh, clothes--that doesn't help--I can't remember.  Second, what is she shopping for?  Hmm--everything.  That doesn't help either.  So, I start searching.  I roam through the aisles.  Where is she hiding?  Perhaps I should go for a coffee or just come back tomorrow?  Then I get another idea--I'll ask others.  I've actually asked strangers if they have seen my wife--they look at me like I'm nuts.  So, I do what everyone would do-- I call her on her cell phone,  "Hi honey, where are you?"  We reunite, I rent a fork lift, load up a transport truck and take our purchases home.

I'm now fully convinced at the ripe age of 53 that God is a better searcher than I am.  Actually Abraham Heschel wrote this:
"All of human history as, seen by the Bible, is the history of God in search of man. In spite of man's failure, over and over,  God does not abandon His hope to find righteous men."  I think Heschel noted two important things.  First, God is searching for us--we are not searching for Him.  That's good--that means there is hope for humanity.  If humanity were left totally to itself--we'd all be in deep trouble.  Second, Heschel points out that God has not given up on this fact:  someone, somewhere-- is going to get it!  Someone, somewhere will actually start living righteously.  And God, has not given up His search for those people.  Which brings to me to this bottom line--God is searching for you!  And that, is something to think about.
