You know this--who do we blame for most things? Politicians! It's all their fault! You know, stuff like the cost of oil, the cost of the telephone, the pot holes on our streets, the grade four curriculum, the lack of summer, the size of watermelons, my noisy neighborhood, etc. all point to a deficient government. So, our 'solution' is democracy. If you're cheesed off with the price of gas, vote in another leader, or another party. Yes sir, that's the solution--because everything that is too pricy, too noisy, broken, useless, etc. is the fault of our government. Whew! I feel better. Actually, I don't because I really don't believe that. There are things that politicians deal with, but there are things they cannot deal with. Philip Yancey suggests that politicians deal with external things--things like borders, wealth and crime. However, stuff that is on the inside of people cannot dealt with by politicians. Politicians have no cure for the evil that lurks inside the hearts of Canadians. No amount of procedures, bills, or arguing--(oops -read discussing) in the House of Commons can cure the evil in our hearts. The other interesting thing that Yancey points out is that evil has an infectious nature about it-- one cough infects a whole busload. So, let's stop thinking that all the answers rest at 545 Talbot Street St Thomas, Queen's Park, or even Ottawa. Work as diligently as they might; they will never cure the evil in our hearts. No, the evil that lurks within will find no solution at any constituency office. That is something politicians cannot cure. And that, is something to think about. |
